Medical Writing in India

After noticing that many visitors to my sites came from India, I decided to do some research about it. I was wondering why medical writing is so popular in India. I found an article online that provided some insights:

"India has a pool of qualified, talented and experienced medical scientists. India, each year, produces approximately three million graduates, 700,000 post-graduates and 1500 PhDs in the scientific stream. This includes around 18,000 medical graduates passing out from 200 medical schools. Many Indian professionals have thorough knowledge of good clinical practices, drug development, experience with basic and clinical sciences and good writing skills. Many of them also possess industry experience and consequently know how to put together reports and analyze safety data.

"Further, English is the primary language of these professionals and they can communicate and produce good quality, scientific documents just like their American and British counterparts. An interesting fact is that according to some estimates, 15% of the scientific population of pharma and biotech companies in US is of Indian origin.

"Further, due to cost advantages and competitiveness, India is being considered as a destination for medical writing and other CRO services that are needed for the growth of the biopharma segment. Indian professionals have already made their mark in Information Technology and Medical Tourism and now the world is looking at us to be a partner in Clinical Research and Medical Writing."

Interesting. I'll keep you posted of any other information I may find.

  1. Hi Diego,

I am a medical writer from India and I would like to share this:

'Until recently, I held the comfortable notion that my medical writing business would never be threatened by any group of foreign-born writers, no matter how cheaply or efficiently they worked. Maybe people from India can write computer code for $20/hour but writing English that’s another matter. Right?

I was confident about that until I sent out a job posting to my Jobslist the other day. I received a reply from a company-based in India telling me they could get my rather large project done under a really tight deadline. The contact person had 9 medical writer MDs on hand, and they were willing to get the work done over the weekend and charge $50-$60/hr. When I tried to get a sense of how fast they worked, they told me they could probably knock out 500 words in about 1 hour or so (!)

I did not end up outsourcing this project to them, but it really got me thinking. What’s to stop our clients sending their projects over to India to be written by MDs and scientists for $50-60/hour, and then having a grad student in English look over the writing for $25/hour? That’s about an $80 hourly rate compared with a $125+ hourly rate that many US-based writers charge.

I firmly believe in the invisible hand of capitalism–where competition, no matter what form it takes, is a good thing for the economy, but medical writers need to take heed–what’s happened in the IT industry (jobs lost, salaries cut in half) might be on the horizon for medical writing. Don’t think it won’t happen! On the flip side, my new website is being designed by an Indian company and costing $600 not $2500, and I have a feeling it’s going to come out really well. So, there’s $1900 I don’t have to earn.

I never thought I’d have to worry, but I say good luck to the hardworking people in India (and elsewhere) who are building their economies and seem to be thriving. It just means we have to work more efficiently and try to be more polite than they are–if that’s possible. '

This was a blog entry from a medical writer who has been writing since 1988.

Indian English may be different from American English because of influence of several years of British rule. But I am sure you can count on the accuracy of content when it comes from India.

  4. I work as a medical writer for a pharmaceutical company that is trying offshore medical writing in India.

This experiment is not going well. Only the simplest of documents are being prepared there. For early drafts, quality is poor. They are completed with a lot of hand holding and rewriting from experienced writers. Deadlines are missed frequently.

It will be many years before there is a work force that is up to speed. My company expects me to train my offshore replacement, but I am planning my exit now to work for a smaller company or CRO that appreciates the contribution I make. Experienced medical writers will be needed in the US for years to come. There is more to regulatory writing than just speaking English.

  41. Hi Diego and Natasha,

I'm Dr Chaithanya, MBBS doctor from India, working as a freelance medical writer. I can very well write copyscape passed medical articles.
I'm interested in improving my skills, so that I master in the core part of medical writing.
My aim is establish a medical writing company, handle a team of medical writers, and take up most/wide variety of medical write up's.

I have purchased your e book, and also studied various blog posts, sites abut medical writing.

I'm still confused about what medical writing certification could push my career in a right direction.

I'm looking for a online medical writing course, and a certificate, which will be valid to produce in my credentials, that clients will be willing me to offer me more works.

I seriously need a mentor in this field. I can say I'm in middle of the sea.

    Please guide me regarding this.
    My mail is docalwdoc@gmail.com.
